PARENTING COORDINATION in SWFL
Supporting Families, Centering Children
At Joshua Tree Counseling, we understand that co-parenting after separation or divorce can be challenging—especially when communication breaks down or conflict arises. Parenting coordination offers a child-focused solution to help parents navigate these difficulties and make decisions in the best interest of their children.
What Is Parenting Coordination?
Parenting coordination is a court-ordered or agreed-upon alternative dispute resolution process designed to assist parents in implementing or improving their parenting plan. It focuses on reducing conflict and fostering cooperation, all with the goal of supporting a more stable and positive environment for your children.
As defined in Section 61.125 of the Florida Statutes:
“Parenting coordination is a child-focused alternative dispute resolution process whereby a parenting coordinator assists the parents in creating or implementing a parenting plan by facilitating the resolution of disputes between the parents by providing education, making recommendations, and, with the prior approval of the parents and the court, making limited decisions within the scope of the court’s order of referral.”
How Parenting Coordination Helps
A trained Parenting Coordinator (PC) works with both parents to:
Improve communication and reduce conflict
Clarify and implement parenting plan responsibilities
Facilitate child-focused decisions in times of disagreement
Educate parents on child development and co-parenting dynamics
Make recommendations and, with proper authorization, limited binding decisions
This process is not therapy. It is a structured, legally supported method of keeping the focus on the children’s well-being while reducing the emotional toll and legal expenses that ongoing conflict can create.
When to Consider Parenting Coordination
Parenting coordination may be appropriate when:
Parents experience high conflict during or after a custody agreement
There are ongoing disputes about time-sharing, scheduling, or parenting responsibilities
The court has recommended or ordered a parenting coordinator
There’s a desire to avoid repeated litigation and prioritize the child’s stability
